Bright future ahead for alt-rockers Delorentos

Playing songs from one of 2014’s most euphoric records, Delorentos make a welcome return to Galway’s Róisín Dubh next Friday, November 14. The Dublin based quartet are celebrating the release of their fourth album, Night Becomes Light, which is their first with Universal Ireland. Releasing an album is different when you sign to a major label, says Rónán Yourell, singer and guitarist with the alt-rock outfit.

“On the week of release, I wasn’t picking up CDs from the manufacturer and driving them around to shops,” he says. “All that kind of stuff we would’ve had to do before. It just means that we can focus completely on the music, rather than all the little practical things.

“Obviously, there’s that little bit of extra financial clout. We’re aiming at TV ads for the album, which we never had before. But I don’t think we’ll ever lose that very hands-on way that we have. We’ll always be deeply involved in everything we do; I hope so, anyway.”

That includes choosing their artwork. Delorentos once again chose to work with Swedish based couple M&E, who did the cover for their Choice Prize winning Little Sparks. The arresting cover for Night Becomes Light shows a silhouetted cityscape with a sun rising over it.

“Everything they do is handmade,” Rónán says. “That photograph is a composite – the cityscape is a cut-out in wood, and the sun you see rising is a light bulb. They physically create everything.

“The weird thing is, they do it so well you wouldn’t even know. It was the same with the cover for Little Sparks. They built a gate and attached sparklers to the gate, lit it, brought it outside and took pictures. They treat them afterwards, but it’s done so well.”
