A rich blend of golden oldies and exciting young pretenders proved the perfect combination for Clarinbridge on Saturday evening as they blitzed Kilbeacanty to claim the 2020 Junior C county title in a one-sided decider at Kenny Park.

A quick glance at the Bridge’s starting team and subs will give you an idea of just what Kilbecanaty faced last weekend. Brian Burke, Jamie Cannon, Paul Coen and Liam Donoghue were all members of the All-Ireland club winning side a decade ago, whilst a host of others including Noel Conlon, Liam Madden and David Donoghue took to the field a decade prior to that when the club claimed its first ever senior county title.

Class is indeed permanent and it showed here with Coen and David Donoghue in particular in inspired form while former inter-county goalkeeper Liam Donoghue showed no shortage of classy touches on what he said post-game was his final outing in a Clarinbridge shirt.

Aside from a brief 10-minute spell in the opening half where Kilbeacanty gained the upper-hand and played some quality hurling, Clarinbridge were dominant with Wiliiam Corcoran’s 24th minute goal the beginning of the end for the south Galway side who simply didn’t have the firepower up front to answer back.

Beaten in a replay by Turloughmore in this final two years ago, Kilbeacanty have been so close to getting their hands on that elusive county cup but their wait will have to go on for another few months now at least, though it’s perhaps no bad thing that they face into a new championship campaign in just a few short weeks with a chance to make amends.
