LOVE might be blooming in Galway this St. Valentine’s Day – but there’s little fear that Galway girls will be popping the Big Question this Leap Year.

It appears that Galway women are more traditional and unlikely to be the one proposing marriage, according to those who should know best.

Jewellers in both city and ounty welcome St. Valentine’s Day saying it’s a burst of business in the post Christmas drought but only one of those contacted by the Connacht Tribune know of any woman who is intending to pop the question on February 29.

There’s plenty of engagements in the air with jewellery shops reporting a brisk business but Niall McNeilius of Claddagh Gold in the city is the only one who has had a female customer buying a ring with the intention of popping the question in a fortnight’s time.

Niall, being a discreet jeweller of course, won’t reveal who or where. “Yes, I know of one woman who is going to pop the question this Leap Year but admittedly that is unusual.

“We have other female customers, especially American students buying Claddagh rings for their loved ones for Valentines but one of the most popular items in the shop are the sterling silver ‘My Last Rolo’ which have a symbolic romantic meaning.”
