Bragging rights for MacDara in derby tie
PRIDE is always at stake in any Parish encounter and following a 2-1 success over Cois Farraige on Sunday morning, there is no doubt that MacDara can enjoy the bragging rights out Connemara way for a spell. Their Western Hygiene Supplies Second Division clash provided no shortage of action as various players who crossed the divide from one side to the other went head to head.
After a dreadful start to the season, Cois Farraige kick started a recovery that saw them going on a three match winning run, that culminated in a victory over league leaders Kinvara United the previous week. Mind you, MacDara were in a bit of form themselves, with victory in two of their previous three games.
On Sunday, it was Cois Farraige who made the initial breakthrough as Eanna O’Conghaile fired them ahead, following a John Dunworth corner in the early exchanges. The Carraroe based home side responded before the break, as Eamonn Lynch set up Maitiu O’Domhnaill and he skipped away to head home the equaliser, for his first goal of the season.
The competition continued to be fierce and it was MacDara who went on to grab the second half winner, for after O’Domhnaill was fouled outside the box, Lynch fired home his seventh goal of the season to secure the winner with a stunning free kick.
There was a huge shock out in Kilcornan, as a Darragh Greaney goal gave Colga a 1-0 win over second placed Loughrea, as the visitors lost out on the opportunity to go back to the top of the table. The victory moved Colga off the bottom of the table.
Moyne Villa put some recent poor form behind them as opening half goals by Stephen Monaghan and Mark Gibbons helped them to a 2-1 win over Craughwell United under lights in Headford on Friday evening. Niall Callinan pulled one back for the visitors in the second half. Extensive soccer wrap up in this week’s Connacht Tribune.
