Boyd’s dramatic try lands Glynn Cup for Galwegians

THINKING outside the box is the only way forward for sports clubs trying to survive and grow on this island.
Community amateur sport has taken a bit of a pelting in recent time often simply as a result of our devotion to professional sport. On St Patrick’s Day in Corinthian Park, the seeds of the revival of club rugby were clear for all to see.
The club was king in rugby during the 90’s but the game at club level has suffered considerably since the Millennium after the Heineken Cup, Magners League and an expanded International calendar took on a new prominence. Halting the trend hasn’t been easy and many club-driven efforts to do so are only in their infancy.
Tuesday’s novel venture between Galway city’s two AIB League clubs may well herald a new way forward and can certainly be considered a tremendous success. Over 600 players from Corinthians and Galwegians took part during the course of a sun-drenched day and well over 2,500
people attended the free spectacle.
The Ryder Cup style format was devised as an event that would foster a community spirit in both clubs and judging by the huge turnout and passionate support, the objective was achieved. No doubt the fine weather helped swell the crowd but the competitive nature of the matches mixed with a strong emphasis on fun and banter was vital.
