Boston Mayor to lay foundation stone at Carna Commemorative Centre
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The newly inaugurated Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh will lay the foundation stone for an Emigrants’ Commemorative Centre in his father’s home parish of Carna when he visits Connemara later this year.
Mayor Walsh confirmed this to Galway County Mayor, Liam Carroll when they met in Boston this week at the inauguration ceremonies.
It will be an occasion full of symbolism- the Mayor of the City of Boston laying the first stone in a centre in his father’s home parish in Connemara…a centre that will honour and celebrate those who emigrated over the years.
The Centre has links to the Walsh family. Marty Walsh’s late father John and his aunts and uncles and relatives crossed the threshold into the old Carna village hall many times in their youth. Now the old hall is set to be incorporated in an Emigrants and Diaspora Commemorative Centre.
Marty Walsh has been one of the patrons of the project since the effort began a few years ago.
Now, as the wheels of history turn full circle, Mayor Walsh of Boston will retrace his family footsteps to launch the Emigrants Centre in Carna when he visits next April or May.
