Boost your immunity as freedom beckons
Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara
With some minor easing of restrictions on their way as the vaccination programme crawls along, now is the not the time to get infected. The finishing line is in sight. Among health practitioners, there is a campaign to encourage people to ensure their immune system is as robust as it can be.
Research has shown that an immune system which is not properly fueled or is impaired can raise the risk of a poor response to vaccination.
The European Food Safety Authority has reiterated the importance of vitamins A, B6, B9, B12, C and D and the minerals zinc, selenium, iron and copper for the immune system to function as it should and to reduce the risk of infection.
Pharmacist Sinead Mullins from Mullins CarePlus Pharmacy in Salthill has compiled a list of the seven best ways to supercharge your immunity.
And, of course, top of that list is diet.
“Maintaining a healthy diet keeps the immune system balanced and ready to fight against infection and viruses”, says Sinead. “When it comes to shopping for fruit and veg, a rule of thumb is the more colour the better. It is also important to note that a strong immune system is built by maintaining healthy eating habits over time”.
Keep Moving – “Engaging in regular, moderate exercise, such as a daily 30-minute walk can help your immune system to fight infection.” Regular aerobic or moderate exercise prior to receiving the Covid-19 vaccination can help improve antibody responses post vaccination in older people, according to researchers at Trinity College Dublin.
