Efforts are underway to prevent an oil spill from the ‘Pantanal’ cargo ship run aground off Rossaveal in Connemara this afternoon.

The Casla Bay unit of the Coastguard unit is putting out booms around the ship in the event of an oil leak.

Local commercial divers will carry out an inspection of the hull in the next hour or two.

The German owners of the 120 metre long ship are in the process of organising a tug boat from Foynes to pull the ship off the rocks.

It’s expected to arrive in Rossaveal harbour late this afternoon.

In the meantime, a Goods deliveries boat to the Aran Islands will put anchors out in Casla Bay and try to winch the ship off the rocks.
