Irlande 66/69 – Images of Ireland in the late 1960s, a compilation of photographs by Belgian photographers Nutan and Yellow, will be launched in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Middle Street, this Friday, June 3 at 6pm. The book will be launched by Leitrim writer Brian Leyden who has provided the text for the book.

Guy Jungblut, a James Joyce enthusiast, arrived in Dublin in the summer of 1966 with his girlfriend Andree and found the city captured by Joyce in his work still largely intact. Jungblut – who took the professional name ‘Yellow’ – was a student photographer in Dublin to complete

an end-of-year and end of study-project for the Saint Luc photography school in Liege, Belgium. In the summer of 1969 another young Belgian photographic

student Jacques Piraprez – known as Nutan – also arrived in Ireland with his girlfriend Miou to finish his end-of-year studies in the same school.

The images captured by the two friends on their separate visits combine to provide a richly evocative black and white portrait of Ireland in the 1960s, from Dublin City to the Dingle Regatta, the Galway Races and the RDS horsey set.

Nutan now lives in Kinvara and, through the decades, has been one of Ireland’s most highly regarded photographers.

All are welcome to the launch.
