Bonus point wins for Connacht, Corinthians and ’Wegians
It was a good weekend on the rugby front for the flagship Galway outfits, with Connacht, Corinthians and Galwegians all taking a maximum five points from their games on Saturday.
Connacht defeated Treviso 38-6 in the RaboDirect Pro12 League in the Sportsground on Saturday, running in six tries against the Italians to move up to ninth in the table.
John Muldoon (2), Kieran Marmion, Eoin McKeon and Fionn Carr scored the Connacht tries to make it back-to-back bonus point wins for Connacht.
In the Ulster Bank League, Corinthians maintained their grip on second place in Division 1b with a comfortable 31-5 win over Dungannon that saw them also run in five tries, Darren Panter (2), Mickey Murphy, John Burns and Bryan Dixon all crossing the try-line for the home side to continue their push for the promotion play-off.
Galwegians continued their march to the Division 2A title with a hard-fought 28-12 win over City of Derry, to leave them within touching distance of the title, and promotion.
Colin Conroy, Jerome Harrimate and Caolin Blade all scored tries, while ’Wegians were also awarded a penalty try. They face second-placed NUIM Barnhall in two weeks’ time where a win will all but secure the title and promotion – they are 13 points ahead of Barnhall with three games remaining, while Ballymena are 14 points behind, and though they have four games left to play, the gap looks too big to close at this stage.
