‘Bonkers’ plan for Park & Ride at €10m site in Doughiska

A controversial plan by Galway City Council to locate a new Park and Ride facility on a seven-acre plot of land in Doughiska has been described as “absolutely bonkers”.

The owners of the land – which is zoned for residential and commercial use – are understood to have been told by City Council officials that they want the land for a Park and Ride and will acquire it by Compulsory Purchase Order if necessary.

The landowners are vehemently opposed to the proposal – they are planning to build around 200 houses and apartments, along with a crèche and gymnasium on the site, which is located beside the Lidl store on the Doughiska Road. The land is understood to be valued at around €10 million.

Galway West TD Noel Grealish has slammed the Council for selecting this site over the old Galway Airport facility.

“The new location for Park and Ride is the gateway to Galway City and will create more traffic problems than it will solve. It is absolutely bonkers and one of the worst decisions that the Council officials have ever made.

“There are 120 acres of land at Galway Airport in Carnmore with surface parking already lined and marked out and to ignore such an option is nothing short of madness. The City Council will really have to look at themselves,” Deputy Grealish added.
