Galway City Council is hopeful that subject to it securing funding, the new €7million boardwalk from Blackrock to Silver Strand will be completed by early 2010.

The project to extend the Prom —which will commence at the end of next year after being given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanála last week — is part of a coastal erosion protection plan to save one of the City’s most famous tourist attractions, Silver Strand Beach, from disappearing from the landscape.

The Council’s Executive Engineer, Sinéad Johnstone, said that storm waves were attacking the base of the cliffs and eroding the landmark attraction and that following the Planning Board’s decision, “action could now be taken to arrest the erosion process and to preserve the important Silver Strand Beach amenity and conservational value of Lough Rusheen”.
