Date Published: 30-Apr-2008

The way Galway county council manages the downturn in the local economy will determine our future.

That’s according to Ballinasloe councillor Michael Finnerty who was speaking after a bleak IDA presentation to county councillors this week.

IDA Regional Director for the West Maura Saddington, highlighted the challenges she’s facing in attracting multinationals to towns such as Tuam and Ballinasloe.

She said foreign industrialists are looking for proximity to airports, broadband, roads, water and other basic infrastructure in a town before they’ll decide to locate a base there.

Many councillors pointed out that Tuam is at a major disadvantage with no broadband infrastructure yet.

Ballinasloe councillor Michael Finnerty says it’s now down to councillors to provide the infrastructure to attract jobs.
