Bizet opera at the Eye
Bizet’s opera Les Pêcheurs de Perles will kick off the 2016 Met Opera Live Spring Season when it’s shown at the Eye Cinema this Saturday, January 16, as part of its worldwide screening programme to cinemas.
Bizet’s story of lust and longing is set in the Far East and this production marks the first time in 100 years it has been staged by the New York Metropolitan Opera.
Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leila, a beautiful Hindu priestess who is pursued by rebel divers competing for her hand.
The competing divers are played by tenor Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet Au Fond du Temple Saint, beloved of opera fans worldwide.
This production, directed by cutting-edge British director Penny Woolcock vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met. It is conducted by Italian-born Gianandrea Noseda.
It will be staged this Saturday, January 16, starting at 6pm with a running time of 150 minutes. Tickets are €24 per adult and €12 per child, or €60 for a family of four.
