Bish move tops submissions on Draft City Plan
The proposed relocation of The Bish secondary school to Dangan on a site currently owned by NUI Galway ‘tops the charts’ in terms of submissions received on the next Galway City Draft Development Plan.
Submissions closed for the 2017-2023 Draft Development Plan last Friday, March 11, with around 50 of those referring to the move of St Joseph’s Secondary School from Nun’s Island to Dangan.
The City Council has confirmed that a total of 261 submissions were received by the March 11 deadline, covering a wide range of issues across the greater urban area.
“All of the submissions received are part of the process and are currently being considered by the Planning Department of the City Council.
“The Council’s Chief Executive [Brendan McGrath] will then prepare a report on the submissions which will be considered by a City Council meeting sometime in May.
“After that, the City Council will be holding a series of meetings through June and July to consider in detail all aspects of the City Draft Development Plan including all submissions,” said a spokesman for the City Council.
The Galway City Tribune understands that the largest tranche of submissions on the new plan are in relation to The Bish school move proposal to a four-acre site at Dangan located between the hockey pitch and the Regional Sports Centre.
Local residents already have held meetings opposing the plan with most concerns based on traffic congestion that would result from having a large second level school located there.
