BIG PUSH FOR FUNDING TO REHABILITATE TYNAGH MINES SITE
Date Published: 01-Apr-2008
It’s hoped funding for the complete rehabilitation of the Tynagh mines site will be secured before the end of the year.
There’s much concern in the area about possible ground water contamination from the site
At this week’s council meeting Councillor Peter Feeney put forward a motion that there be no development on the site, and it was agreed.
The council has also requested that the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources provide immediate funding to rehabilate the site.
Councillor Feeney says he’s hopeful of getting the funding because work has been carried out at Silvermines in Tipperary and he maintains the problems in Tynagh are worse.
In the meantime the council members want a groundwater study carried out in the area to obtain more information about possible contamination.
