Big increase in participation in Schools’ rugby

THE draws for the Connacht Tribune Schools’ rugby cups, which took place on Monday night, show the dramatic expansion in schools’ rugby over the past decade. A total of 18 schools will take part in the senior competitions while 28 will participate at junior level.

“The Connacht Branch has invested in development officers to promote the game in primary and post-primary schools over the past five years” said President of Schools’ rugby Paul Kilraine. “This is now paying off with teams emerging in An Cheathrú Rua, Tuam, Mountbellew, Athenry and other towns around the province.”

The Senior Cup draw contains four seeded teams, Coláiste Iognáid (Jes), Marist, Sligo Grammar and Gallen CC (Ferbane), all of which have been kept apart until the semifinal stage if they progress that far.

Although 13 Galway teams are taking part, holders Jes are the early favourites with 11 of last year’s squad and a sizeable contingent of Connacht representatives throughout their team.

However, Marist, Athlone have contested the last two finals at both senior and junior levels and have a strong team this year.
