Bid to boost mart cattle sales

A NATIONWIDE campaign to promote the selling of heavier cattle at marts – rather than the factories – was launched this week in Galway by IFA President, Tim Cullinan.

The strategy to boost the sales of fat stock kicked off with marts across Connacht and Clare in a bid to improve bidder competition for heavier cattle.

According to Connacht IFA Chairperson, Pat Murphy, marts offer a very competitive market set-up for heavier cattle with factories buying a lot of such stock at marts.

“There is competition at the marts and really good prices being achieved for heavier animals – we believe that the mart option is one that farmers should consider seriously,” Pat Murphy told the Farming Tribune.

He also said that there were ‘no second chances’ at the meat plants if farmers weren’t satisfied with the price as compared to the marts where the animals could be brought home if the seller ‘wasn’t happy’.

Security of payment was also guaranteed at the marts, he added, while most marts around the province were also largely farmer owned.

Galway-Mayo IFA Regional Executive, Roy O’Brien, told the Farming Tribune that in the context of this latest initiative with the marts, it was important that farmers strictly adhered to all of the latest COVID-19 guidelines.
