Bergin steps down as camogie boss in shock move
GALWAY camogie begin the search for a new senior manager after Ollie Bergin’s shock resignation from the position at Monday night’s County Camogie Convention held in the Lough Rea Hotel & Spa.
It had been expected that Bergin would retain his senior managerial role after a year in which he guided the senior outfit to the National League final and the All-Ireland semi-final.
In both games, they were defeated by this year’s All-Ireland champions Kilkenny – with the Tribeswomen, who had skinned the Cats in the groups stages – only narrowly losing that All-Ireland semi-final after extra-time.
Given it was the Kinvara man’s first year in the post, and with the rumour mill relatively quiet, it had been anticipated that he would be appointed for another year but in an astonishing departure from the script Bergin resigned from the position on Monday night citing “personal commitments”.
The search for a new manager has begun with nominations for the vacant position now being sought from the clubs.
Meanwhile, Lorraine Larkin, who led the Tribesgirls to the All-Ireland minor camogie final where they were defeated by Tipperary after a replay, will continue as minor boss for 2017.
She will also marry this post with that of Galway intermediate manager, replacing the outgoing Brian Griffin. Tony O’Donovan was appointed as the chief mentor of the county’s U-16 side.
At the top table, Frank Duane was ratified as Chairman once more with Geraldine McGrath and Gerry Dolan appointed as Secretary and Assistant Secretary/Registrar respectively.
Sean Geraghty continues in his post as Treasurer with Catherine Kilkelly and JJ Manton fulfilling the roles of Assistant Treasurers. Brian Molloy is PRO.
