A model area plan — the first of its kind in country — has finally been adopted for Bearna.

Galway County councillors on Monday voted to accept the County Manager’s report on submissions made by the public after the plan has been on public display at least twice.

It is the first area plan that takes community needs into consideration and where planners have looked at a village’s existing facilities, expected expansion and the anticipated community demands of a growing population.

It breaks away from the more traditional method of zoning large tracts of land for various uses to consider environmental issues and is far more flexible to facilitate mixed uses for the
community.

Twenty one submissions were made on the original published plan and these in turn have also been put on public display for four weeks up to November 9 last.
