Beach ban proposed for dogs and hurlers

Dogs will be banned during summer days – and playing football or hurling will outlawed on beaches across the county – if draft bylaws are adopted.

The use of lilos or “inflatable water toys” will be prohibited, while people giving lessons in surfing or paddleboarding and even yoga will have to get a licence from Galway County Council under the proposed changes. That will cost up to €300 per summer season.

Playing of any sport, including volleyball, “in such a matter as to cause nuisance or danger”, will no longer be permitted. Visitors in campervans will also be unwelcome.

The public will get a chance to have their say on the proposed new regulations which will replace current ones in place across beaches for the last 25 years.

Those caught breaking the bylaws will have to fork out an on-the-spot fine of €75 or nearly €2,000 on conviction in court.

Among the more controversial measures contained in the draft bylaws is a proposal to ban dogs between 11am and 7pm daily during the summer season, which is defined as June 1 to September 15. Outside of those hours, dogs must be on a leash. The rules also outlaw horses.
