Basking in the glow of Charlie!

Galway actor Seán T Ó Meallaigh features in the new RTE mini-series, Charlie, broadcast on Sundays.

The Salthill man who featured in a number of television, film and stage productions, plays an unnamed businessman in Charlie which is based on the life of Charlie Haughey.

Seán, who is currently in Dublin working on another project, says his part in Charlie is small but that he enjoyed his few days on set in Dublin in October 2013.

“I am an unnamed businessman; a wheeler dealer say. That says it all! The nature of the acting business is that it’s a feast or a famine and sometimes schedules clash. As it happened when I was filming Charlie in Dublin, I was coming down to Galway to take part in a puppet show for television that was shot in Studio Solas the same time!”

A few months ago, he was on the set of Klondike, a series based on the US gold rush of the 1800s, which was filmed in Oughterard and will be broadcast on TG4 this September.

He is currently back in Dublin shooting a docudrama film called Death or Liberty, which is about Irish and Welsh convicts sent to Australia in the 19th century.

But despite his small role in Charlie, Seán has been getting a great response to his first appearance in Sunday’s episode, including a Tweet from his former engineering lecturer whom he hasn’t seen in ten years!

“It’s amazing the number of people who did tune in on Sunday and I have got a good few messages about it,” says Seán, who says that for now, acting is his first choice profession and he doesn’t see himself going back to engineering anytime soon!
