Barrett’s first touch leaves Fingal flummoxed

MERVUE United stole a point in the dying moments of the match against a superior Sporting Fingal side at Terryland Park on Friday. The hosts’ ‘never say die’ attitude was rewarded with an equaliser two minutes from time from debutant substitute Kevin Barrett with his first touch of the game.

Barrett’s goal earned Mervue a point that they scarcely deserved, having endured long periods of pressure from the visitors and going into the closing stages fortunate not to trail by more than a single goal.

Fingal had broken the deadlock after 76 minutes when former Leeds United trainee Robert Bayly controlled Eamon Zayed’s cross inside the area and powered a well-placed shot into the middle of the Mervue net.

The goal was just desserts for the Dublin side that had dominated much of the play and struck the bottom of the post just moments before the breakthrough.

It was a gutsy performance from Mervue however, and they carved out a number of chances that might have caused an upset against their high-flying opponents.
