Baroque music to lift spirits in troubled times

Luminosa whose online performance starts at 7.30pm this Friday night.

Galway’s fledgling orchestra, Luminosa Music had great plans for 2020, but as with other arts organisations, these have largely come to nought due to Covid-19.   This has left its members with little or no work, and considerable uncertainty, says Lucy Hayward, Luminosa’s orchestral director and CEO. And she knows this uncertainty is widespread.

“Our audiences are experiencing these times as very challenging too and we wanted to bring something very special to them,” she explains.

That something is “a concert of glorious Baroque music to console and lift the spirit”, which will be livestreamed from Galway Cathedral this Friday night, starting at 7.30pm.

It will include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, which is usually heard on Good Friday, illustrating the sorrow and pain of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This performance is dedicated to everyone in mourning, whether it’s the death of a loved one, the loss of work, or of life pre-Covid, says Lucy.

Vivaldi’s Nulla in Mundo (There is no true peace in this world without bitterness), which is considered one of the most beautiful solo motets, will also be performed.

“The programme, Voces Luminis (voices of Light), aims to reflect on the suffering we have all experienced and give whatever relief we can through the medium of sublime Baroque music,” she adds.
