Barna ‘big dig’ to cause traffic tailbacks

Coast Road through Barna can expect massive traffic delays at various intervals over the coming 12 months as the centre of the village is set to be turned into one big construction site during sewerage scheme works.
Diggers and trucks loaded with sewer pipes moved into the village in the past few weeks and preliminary work on Phase 1 of the Barna Sewerage Scheme is already underway.
Once the scheme is complete it will enable foul sewage from up to 2,000 homes to be pumped to the main Galway City Main Drainage System for subsequent treatment at Mutton Island.
Three local roads will be closed at various times over the next year during the ‘big dig’while there will be massive tailbacks this summer along the main Road through the village.
It is the main access road to the popular tourist destinations of An Spidéal, Indreabhán, Carna, An Cheathrú Rua, Ros A Mhil and the Arann Islands.
About four years ago advance works on the sewerage scheme in the village caused traffic chaos and long delays.
The sewerage works will include the construction of a new pumping station approximately 240 metres west of the Pier Road. In addition to the underground pumping station, an adjacent above ground compound will house a Control Kiosk, Odour Scrubber Unit and Dosing Tanks. The majority of the Foul Sewers, Storm Water Pipelines, Rising Mains and Replacement Watermains will be laid in roads with the remainder being laid in fields.
