Baptism of fire in Covid for fashionista turned proprietor
Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara
It was not exactly the perfect start to a new business for Fiona Charity. When she opened Modella Fashion in Corrandulla last July, the country was out of lockdown but there was no racing or weddings allowed which entice women to splurge for a new outfit.
There have been two lockdowns since then, with all the hassle of turning around stock in between seasons. But this time, with widescale vaccinations, there is a real hope these will be a thing of the past for retailers and customers alike.
“A lady who came in for the first appointment when we reopened was just excited to touch everything. She was so delighted to physically try on clothes. There was a great sense of atmosphere this time around. A lot of people have been vaccinated so there was a lot of positivity.”
And while it will be some time yet before major celebrations are permitted, women haven’t been shy getting in a bit of retail therapy.
“I was surprised myself how many people are buying occasion wear. I thought it would be more casual wear. We’ve had a lot of mothers of the bride and groom in even though weddings numbers are so small – people have waited so long they’re just going for it,” reveals Fiona.
“A lot of them have said they just didn’t want to go online to buy, they wanted to try on so they were holding out. The blues and pinks remain the old reliables for colour this season and we’ve had a big demand for headpieces.”
Jumpsuits have been a popular choice for mums attending family communions and confirmations, which are starting to return after a long hiatus.
