Banff Film Festival aims for sky on Galway visit
Canada’s Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will be in Galway on Thursday, May 8, as part of its annual visit to Ireland and the UK.
The festival, Big Screen, Big Stories, showcases the best of the latest films from people involved in mountain sports worldwide and this is its first time visiting Galway.
The selection of short films being screened will allow people to travel the world and experience inspirational and unforgettable adventures – all from the comfort of Galway’s Town Hall Theatre.
Documentaries being shown in Galway will cover activities such as mountain climbing, mountain biking, adventure travel, skiing and kayaking as well as the he bizarre sport of wingsuit flying.
The Banff World Tour travels the globe every year, bringing films to more than 400 communities and over 40 different countries from Australia through to Antarctica, with screenings being attended by more than 300,000 people. The touring programme is selected from 360 films, including award-winners and audience favourites, which were entered into the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival held in the Canadian Rockies last November.
North of the Sun, which won the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award at Banff, is among the films being shown here in Galway. The 46-minute documentary travels to a remote spot tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the rocky slopes of an Arctic island, where two young Norwegian adventurers create their own private playground.
