Ban on Sunday burials to save costs

SUNDAY burials after funerals may become a thing of the past if Galway City Council proceeds with plans to slash costs.
The cash-strapped Council is planning to put an end to overtime for grave-diggers to work on Sundays at Rahoon Cemetery and the New Cemetery in Bohermore in an effort to curb spending.
A local authority official has written to Bishop of Galway Martin Drennan, as well as undertakers around the city asking for their views on banning the age-old tradition.
The proposal has been slammed by city councillor Padraig Conneely, who described it as “ludicrous”.
