Ballygar gathers to explore ‘The Elephant in the Room’

The Elephant in the Room: Conversations on Diversity will take place in Ballygar from this Saturday, September 14, to Sunday, September 22.

This community project will be launched on Saturday night at 8pm by writer, philosopher and Benedictine monk, Mark Patrick Hederman, in Ballygar Town Hall.

He will set the tone for the week with his talk on the theme of equality.

This project in the North-East Galway village involves 12 visual artists, four primary schools, three secondary schools, community groups, guest speakers, local and European public representatives and panellists. There will also be film and documentary screenings, community workshops, presentations and exhibitions, among other events.

The Elephant in the Room was inspired by the themes of Language, Landscape and Migration adopted by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture, explains Josephine Stoker of the Ballygar Arts and Theatre Space, who are coordinating the project.

The many changes taking place in Europe extend from Brussels to Ballygar and this week-long event on the theme of diversity is their community response.

Ballygar Town Hall will be transformed into a large art Installation for the duration, with elephants, lanterns and themed art works adorning the walls, ceilings and hallways.

Ballygar Arts and Theatre Space want to explore equality and human rights through these arts projects and talks, in order to begin conversations on how people can live together without prejudice.
