Ballygar GAA club has been blocked in its bid to develop part of its lands as a new housing estate.

An Bord Pleanala refused the nine house development based on its proposed location, as well as the proposed use of an effluent treatment system.

They were initially granted planning permission by Galway county council but this was appealed by heritage group An Taisce.

The group argued that the project represented "inappropriate and piecemeal development" and should be rejected.
