Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Ballinasloe branch of Sinn Fein is to hold a protest in the town tomorrow against the planned closure of St.

Brigid’s psychiatric unit.

The rally is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon (Friday 16th August)at 4.30.

22 acute beds at St. Brigid’s psychiatric unit will be closed by the end of the year as part of reconfiguration plans.

However, the HSE says 22 beds will be maintained in Roscommon and 35 beds in Galway city.

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described it as “another backward step”.

He argues that the bed closures run contrary to the commitment in ‘A Vision for Change’ .

Ballinasloe Town Cllr Michael Breathnach says the closure must be rethought and the decision will be fought.
