Ballinasloe’s secret part in Slumdog success

BALLINASLOE may not be renowned as the breeding ground of Oscar winners – but the town can brace itself for major celebrations if the results of this week’s Golden Globes are any indication of Academy Award success.
Because the hotly tipped Slumdog Millionaire – the moviewhich stole the show with four Golden Globes this week – is the work of director Danny Boyle, who never fails to mention his Ballinasloe roots.
His family may no longer live in the town but Boyle’s mother was a Ballinasloe native, and he credits her for her influence on his life and work – and indeed admits that if she had had her way, he’d more likely be a holy – as opposed to a Hollywood – man.
“My mother, who has died, left me not so much with religion, but with faith in people as a philosophy. I believe people are basically good, always have. She was an amazing woman like that and I carry that always. I’m very proud of it and try to behave that way,” he said.
