Ballinasloe native dies after horse riding accident

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Athenry and Ballinalsoe areas are coming to terms with a tragic horse-riding accident in the midlands, which claimed the life of a Ballinasloe native.

45-year old Cathal O’ Malley died at Tullamore Hospital yesterday after his horse somersaulted and fell on him at a hunter trials.

Cathal O’ Malley owned and ran the Old Barracks restaurant in Athenry with his wife Fiona King.

His second son Gavan was just born a fortnight ago and his son Darragh is 4 years old.

According to today’s Irish Independent, Cathal O’ Malley was an experienced horse rider who hunted with the Galway Blazers.

The father-of-two was participating at a hunter trials in Tullamore when the accident happened.

He was taken to Tullamore Hospital but died a short time later.

The Galway Blazers have paid tribute to Cathal describing him as “a good friend, a gentleman.”
