BALLINASLOE MAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY OVER ROSSAVEAL ASSAULT

A 21 year-old Ballinasloe man has been remanded in custody in connection with a serious assault on another young man at Rosaveal Pier over the weekend.
Jason McLoughlin, from Ballyglass, Ahascragh, Ballinasloe appeared in custody before Galway District Court today.
Jason McLoughlin is charged with assaulting 23 year old David Kilbane at Rossaveal Pier causing him harm in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 3.
Garda Shane Prendergast gave evidence of arresting and charging the accused at 8.20pm yesterday evening at Galway Garda Station.
McLoughlin made no reply when the charge was put to him.
Inspector Brendan Carroll said Gardai had no objection to bail with conditions attached.
Defence solicitor, Adrian MacLynn said his client was not in a position to take up bail.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded McLoughlin in custody with consent to bail to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday, February 8 for DPP’s directions.
Bail was granted on McLoughlin’s own surety of €1,000, half to be lodged in court, and one independent surety of €5,000, with half to be lodged.
Further bail conditions are that he sign on daily at Ballinasloe Garda Station, reside at his home address, observe a curfew between 9pm and 8 am, surrender his passport and not apply for a new one or any other travel documents, stay away from Connemara and Galway city except for court appearances, have no contact with the injured party or witnesses and abstain from alcohol.
McLoughlin, who is single and unemployed was granted free legal aid.
The victim, who is from Barna, is currently in a serious condition at Beaumont Hospital where he is being treated for a serious head injury.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
