When it comes to father daughter bonding, organising an activity that both parties will agree on can sometimes be problematic. The dad wants to watch a soccer match, while the little princess would prefer to use his plastic and go shopping. And music tastes can be quite different too so going to a gig is not always the perfect father daughter date either.
But last weekend when singing legend Mollie O’Brien came to town for the Galway Americana Festival, it was the perfect occasion to catch up with my daddy and hear some great bluegrass
music.
This is the first year of the festival which centred on three great music pubs in town; The Crane (which my dad loves),Monroe’s Tavern
and The Quays. While it saw well known local musicians like Greg Cotter, Mary Flanagan and Harry Donaldson treat us to some great American Country and Roots music blended with traditional Irish tunes in the Crane Bar on the second night of the five day festival, it also saw names like The Maimín Cajun Band, Clive Barnes and, of course, the volce sounding Mollie O’Brien perform.
