Atlantic winds will power new Hydrogen Valley
They’ve got Silicon Valley in Northern California but now Galway City is set to be christened as Ireland’s first Hydrogen Valley – making use of the Atlantic winds over the coming years to generate clean energy.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin breezed into the city on Thursday and confirmed the city’s status as the first hydrogen hub in the country.
Known as GH2 (The Galway Hydrogen Hub), it will bring together seven different groups to pool their energy and resources in the development of hydrogen fuel production and usage.
Involved in the project are, NUI Galway, the Port of Galway, CIÉ/Bus Éireann, Aran Island Ferries, the Lasta Mara Teo delivery company, Aer Arann Islands and SSE Renewables.
A Hydrogen Valley – defined as a geographical city or region dedicated to the development of hydrogen fuel – will have the aim, over the coming years, of making Galway a national development centre for the promotion and use of this energy source.
Hydrogen – one of the most common elements in the planet – is now being developed as a ‘fuel of the future’ by car and engine companies all over the world.
It is being increasingly used as a replacement energy source, instead of the heavy and bulky lithium batteries currently the norm in powering electric vehicles. Hydrogen in a pressurised fuel tank – with the aid of a catalyst – can produce sufficient energy to fuel relatively powerful engines.
