Athenry students’ poignant Bloody Sunday Commemoration
A well-planned, respectful and sometimes poignant Bloody Sunday commemoration was presented by students and staff of Clarin College, Athenry in the school’s courtyard on Friday last – the precursor to a weekend of national remembrance.
Because of the Covid 19 social distancing restrictions, it required precise planning and it went off without a hitch.
It began with the school’s football panel in Tipperary and Dublin jerseys filing in to the yard led by Lauren Flanagan and Sarah Bowman carrying the county flags.
His was followed by 80 transition year students representing the ten GAA clubs from the school’s catchment area, Athenry, Abbeyknockmoy, Clarinbridge, Craughwell, Killimordaly, Kilconieron, Mellows/Beagh and Turloughmore forming socially-distanced lines in formation.
In all, 14 students then entered and took up position, each carrying a printed image of one of the 14 who died that day.
