Date Published: 21-Jul-2010
The first sod on a 20 million euro Ring Road for Athenry, which will remove a large volume of traffic from the town, was turned this afternoon.
Mayor of County Galway, Jimmy McClearn did the honours in a soggy field on the Tuam road in Athenry.
The current phase of the road scheme, which was launched today, will link the Cartymore road and Tuam road in Athenry and is valued at around 3 million euro.
The majority of the work on the 6 and a half kilometre ring-road,will be carried out by the County Council itself.
Director of Services for Roads with Galway County Council, Frank Gilmore says the ringroad will complete Athenry’s road network.
