Athenry four-piece to launch debut album
Athenry-based indie four-piece, My Other Accent, will release their debut album Black Economy on March 16. The first single on the album, Day and Age is already available to download.
My Other Accent comprises Michael Dillon on guitar and vocals, Mick Rogers on keyboard and vocals, Paul Mahony on bass and vocals, and Adam Feeney on the drums.
The album will be a cross between Beck and Barry Manilow, according to Michael Dillon. Commentators have already likened the music to bands like Fleet Foxes, Grant Lee Buffalo and REM, because of their use of harmonies, while the literary references in the songs are redolent of The Doors and The Smiths.
“I suppose what we have is a kind of indie sensibility. Whatever that is, I’m not exactly sure,” says Michael, mentioning The Smiths, The Cure and The Pixies as influences. “It’s probably about having a certain outlook and trying to get that into the music somehow. So without being overtly political, we try to get across a world view.”
When the members of My Other Accent started to think about the album as a themed album, they felt that the title would have to get across some of what they were trying to portray.
“The album is, whether we like it or not, definitely positioned within post-Celtic Tiger Ireland. That’s where we live and we’re amused and bemused by much of what has gone on,” Michael says.
Black Economy will be released on 16 March.
