IT was hard not to feel sympathy for the players from both sides in this U-21 A hurling decider played at Ballinderreen on Sunday, given they had to contend with a huge wind blowing straight down the pitch along with the mechanics of trying to capture a County title for their respective clubs.

It was Athenry though with an accomplished performance who captured the club’s ninth crown in the grade and while Mellows battled bravely to the end, a total of 13 wides, eight of which came in the opening period with the strong wind at their backs, unhinged their attempt for glory.

The late change of venue from their own back yard didn’t unnerve Athenry one bit and the Ballinderreen club can be proud of theirwell presented pitch, which was in superb condition given the week’s rain it endured and it was none the worse for ware at the end of the contest either.
