The majority of businesses in Athenry say they have seen a boost in sales as a result of pay parking being introduced in the town.

The scheme began last week in a effort to tackle congestion in the town and prevent illegal parking.

There is a privately-run day long car park at Cross street costing 3 euro per day and the County Council has acquired land to create a Council carpark in the town which should be complete by Christmas.

Mayor of County Galway, Peter Feeney says while there are some drawbacks with the new parking system, most people in Athenry are in favour of it.
