Aslan – still burning that flame after all these years
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Resilience and longevity; two words synonymous with Aslan – and lead singer Christy Dignam in particular – as they prepare for their biggest Galway gig in years. It’s fully forty years since Aslan first formed as a band to dominate Irish music at the back end of the 1980s and 1990s – all more remarkable given the acrimonious breakup that interrupted that from 1988 to 1993.
Frontman Christy Dignam is further testament to that resilience – the vocalist has openly battled with an incurable form of blood cancer for close to ten years. He released his first solo album late last year and appropriately chose to title it The Man Who Stayed Alive.
If anything, Christy’s experience has spurred Aslan on over the last few years. They released a single as recently as two years ago and this week they embark on a national tour that will take them all the way to December.
On Friday March 25, they play Leisureland – and, as the man himself admits, it’s been a long time coming for a band that has been as prolific as any on the Irish circuit over the last four decades.
“Galway has always been a great city for music,” Christy notes.
“It’s probably two or three years since we played Galway so we’re really looking forward to it. We’re looking forward to all of the gigs. It’s not for the financial element or anything like that. It’s just to be doing it again.
