Attempts by religious organisations in Ireland to suppress women’s reproductive rights are examined by artist Jennifer Trouton in a new exhibition at the city’s Galway Arts Centre. Entitled One of Many, it will run until July 17.

In her art, Belfast based Jennifer explores issues around gender, class and identity in Irish history, combining her interest in mythology and history with personal narrative.

Her work highlights how, despite ongoing attempts to reduce women’s influence and autonomy, many of them accessed tools that would help them control their own reproductive destinies. In many cases, they found these objects in their domestic surrounds.

Familiar items, such as knitting needles, soaps, washing powders and herbal teas are presented by Jennifer in nostalgic hues which evoke a sense of comfort and security. However, there’s a deeper narrative because many of these objects became tools for women as they struggled for autonomy and control of their physical and emotional needs.

The shame and stigma attached to abortion has silenced and isolated the women of this country for generations, says the artist. But these experiences are common ones. Although every woman has her own story to tell, she is not alone.
