BUSINESS and arts circles in the city have this week welcomed the easing of Covid restrictions saying that it will provide a welcome ‘injection of optimism’ at the tail end of the summer tourism season.

An early beneficiary of the easing of restrictions – announced earlier this week by Taoiseach Micheál Martin – will be the Galway Arts Festival and venues such as the Town Hall Theatre and Black Box.

Fergal McGrath, Town Hall Theatre and Black Box Venue Director, confirmed to the Galway City Tribune, that the new 60% capacity allocation would apply for Enda Walsh’s Medicine which runs at the Black Box until September 18 next, as one of the showpieces of this year’s Arts Festival.

“The easing of restrictions on numbers attending events is really very good news for everyone involved in the arts. It probably caught us on the hop a little but it still is very, very welcome,” said Fergal McGrath.

The easing of the numbers restrictions will allow the Black Box to accommodate approximately 250 people (normal pre-Covid capacity is 420) for Medicine by Landmark Productions, but patrons will be required to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination certificate.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Galway International Arts Festival said that all ‘new bookers’ and existing ticketholders for any extra capacity shows, would be required to show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination certificate.
