Arthouse cinema to go ahead

WORK can now start on developing an arthouse cinema for the city following Galway City Council’s decision to dispose of a site for the project at Lower Merchant’s Road.

Last night councillors were unanimous as they voted to dispose of the land and they all sang the praises of Lelia Doolan, former Film Board chair and founder of the Galway Film Fleadh, who spearheaded the Arthouse Cinema project.

The project, which will cost a total of €6.36million, is expected to be completed by the end of next year, and will be a cornerstone in the development of a significant cultural facility for the city, alongside the City Museum, which is located on the opposite side of the street.
