Art Gallery for Courthouse

Galway could represent Ireland as European Capital of Culture if the arts infrastructure deficit in the city is addressed according to a City Councillor.

“Galway lost out on an opportunity to represent Ireland as the European Capital of Culture and we were passed over in favour of Cork City because, among other reasons, it had better art infrastructure,” Cllr. Billy Cameron (Lab) said.

He has tabled a motion to the City Council urging that in the event of a future vacation of the Court Services of the present Galway Court house that the building be earmarked as a future municipal art gallery.

“Recent reports in the Connacht Sentinel have stated that the Court Services are looking for buildings or greenfield sites as an alternative to the present building which can no longer cope with the ever increasing workload and severe parking problems in its environs.”
