The army has been called in to deal with a bomb scare on the outskirts of Galway city.

A suspicious package was found in a recycling bin around 9 o’clock this morning by a member of staff arriving to work at the Barna Waste plant on the Headford Road .

Gardai were immediately called and have evacuated staff from the plant to preserve the scene.

Residents of the nearby Carrowbrowne halting site have been moved to a safe distance from the plant and are not permitted to enter or leave the halting site until the situation next door has been made safe.
