AREA AND SEAT CHANGES IN THE CITY AND MAJOR AREA TRANSFERS IN THE COUNTY

The long awaited changes to the Galway city and county council boundaries have been decided by the electoral area boundary committees

In the city there will be changes to all three wards in terms of numbers of seats and minor changes to the geographical areas covered, and they will all get a change of name

In the county there are no seat number changes, the Connemara area remains completely the same but there are significent area transfers in Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Oranmore and Tuam

In the county the changes mean a large number of townlands are being transferred to a different electoral area in order to re-balance the population representation per member, and to make alignments with the Dail constituency boundaries

This in turn means that for next summer’s local elections the people in the townlands affected will be in a different electoral area and be voting for candidates not familiar to them in the main
