Archbishop faces fight over school name

THE Archbishop of Tuam is to be tackled on the name being used for the amalgamation of the two boys’ secondary schools in the town.

There was criticism over the fact that St. Patrick’s College would cease to exist with the amalgamation retaining the name of St. Jarlath’s College only.

Recently it was announced that first year students would not longer be accepted at St. Patrick’s College and the two schools would merge next year in the one campus.

However, the Archbishop Dr. Michael Neary, who is patron to both schools, has decided that the amalgamated school will retain the name of St. Jarlath’s College only.

This caused anger at this week’s meeting of Tuam Town Council who agreed to write to the Archbishop in the hope of having the decision changed. A number of councillors want……….
