The first unmanned card-operated fuel station in the country has been opened on the Aran Islands.

Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív opened the fuel distribution station and recycling centre on Inis Mór at the weekend.

The station is operated by Comharchumann Forbatha Árann Teo in conjunction with Top Oil, and a quarter of a million euro grant from the Department of Gaeltacht Affairs.

It provides green and white diesel and home heating oil to islanders with the provision for biofuels in the future.
